Flowmeters For Agricultural Purposes

Agriculture is one industry where water flow rate must be measured, and there are many types of flowmeters that can be used for measuring the flow rate of water.

An electromagnetic full pipe meter can be fitted on pipes up to 8 inches in diameter, and are accurate to 0.5%. Usually, five inches of straight pipe are sufficient before the meter intake, with two inches or less required downstream, though these numbers will vary. Liquid Flow meters are only as good as their calibration. Usually manufacturers will calibrate a product for their specific service conditions. But users will often perform calibrations on-site for the best accuracy. The particular application will determine the need for calibration and recalibration.

Sometimes abrasive, corrosive, or erosive liquids can cause parts of a flowmeter to deteriorate to the point that performance is affected, and some flowmeter designs are more prone to damage than others. In turbine flowmeters sometimes damage to the turbine blades will cause changes in performance.

Maintenance of a flowmeter will also depend on its application. Poorly selected products will have problems and are more likely to fail prematurely. Flowmeters that have no moving parts will require less in the way of maintenance than, say, turbine models, but all of them will need some attention at some time. Products with moving parts will require inspection for wear and tear, particularly if the water has sediment. Filters may need to be attached before the intake of the liquid flow meters.

Ultrasonic or electromagnetic flowmeters have no moving parts, but may encounter electronic problems. Pressure sensors should be inspected periodically, as dictated by the manufacturer’s instructions. Applications where there could be buildup of iron or calcium deposits could be problematic. Buildup that is electrically insulating can cause magnetic parts to have impaired function if the buildup insulates electrodes from water flow.

Periodic cleaning will generally take care of this problem. Buildup in ultrasonic models can change refraction angles, which will cause the sonic energy the coating absorbs to render it inoperative. Again, cleaning buildup off the inside can take care of the problem.
